Why Detox?

Why Detox?

A detox is one of the most effective tools for rapidly improving the state of your health.

What is toxicity?

How poisonous a substance is.

Some things are very poisonous and even a small amount can be very harmful such as arsenic. Many, many substances are mildly toxic and can be removed without harm in small amounts. However, if you have a large exposure to these milder poisons e.g. pesticides, then over time they overwhelm your ability to “detoxify” or remove them from your body. Also, exposure to several of these mild poisons at once is much more dangerous than one at a time.

Sources of toxins

We are exposed everyday:

Environmental  (external)

  • Metals
  • Alcohol, cigarettes, passive smoke
  • Air pollution & traffic fumes
  • Chemicals – paint fumes, cleaning products, pesticides
  • Radiation – TV, computers, mobile phones

Endogenous (made in your body)

  • Dysbiosis – bad bugs in gut
  • Free radicals
  • Stress
  • Maldigestion

Signs and Symptoms of Toxicity

SHORT – TERM

  • Allergies
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Gut ache
  • Poor memory
  • Muscle aches / pains
  • PMT
  • Nausea

LONG –TERM

  • Asthma
  • Chronic Fatigue syndrome
  • Eczema
  • Recurrent infections
  • Bone loss
  • Dementia (Alzheimer’s)
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Impotence and infertility
  • Heart disease
  • Psoriasis

Why do some people get sick and some don’t?

Two factors impact toxic exposure and how it affects your health:

1. Amount and type of toxin you are exposed to.

2. The resources your body has to deal with it. (How well you detoxify)

If two people are exposed to the same toxins in the same amount and one is not affected and the other develops illness, the first person has a better capacity to detoxify.

How well you detoxify depends on:

  • Liver and kidney function
  • Bowel function
  • Nutrient intake and stores of nutrients
  • Stress
  • Sleep
  • Digestion and absorption of food

The correct approach to “doing a detox”.

Many detox programs solely focus on the liver. This is an incomplete approach as the gut is the major source of toxic exposure for many people and no amount of liver support can help if your system is being overwhelmed with more toxic material from the environment or digestive system.

Normally the lining of the digestive tract is a very good filter allowing nutrients like vitamins and amino acids to pass into the bloodstream and at the same time not allowing the passing through of toxic bacteria and waste products of digestion in the bowel.

This filter of the gut is easily damaged by infection, medications and toxic bacteria which will then allow toxins, bacteria, partially digested food etc into the bloodstream to the liver. The liver will try to filter these toxins but under this tremendous stress, some of this toxic material will enter the general circulation leading to many of the symptoms of toxicity.

This “leaky gut syndrome” results in a great deal of stress upon the immune system, the liver and every other organ and system of the body.

Therefore a detox MUST treat the digestive system and repair the lining of the gut FIRST before cleansing the liver.

TWO STAGE PROCESS:

  1. Repair and rebalance the digestive system
  2. Cleanse and detoxify the liver and other organs of waste removal

Imagine replacing the oil in your car without replacing the filter. The oil will be ruined very quickly.
